As the 2014-2015 NBA pre-season gets underway, the basketball arguments and barbershop debates begin. One we like to debate is who was the best draft class?? Nostalgic fans of the 80’s who won’t let the past go love to bring up the 1984 draft which has some of the NBA’s greatest players, TRUE Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuawon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, John Stockton and a few impact players with long successful careers such as Sam Perkins, Otis Thorpe and Kevin Willis. While it may have been top heavy and produced some of the most influential players at their positions and would change the course of the NBA for years to come I still say NO. Not the ‘84 Draft!
Others bring up the ‘03 NBA Draft with Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade future Hall of Famers and other solid NBA additions David West, Kirk Hinrich, Kyle Korver and Chris Kaman. NOPE, wrong again!!
That brings me to the 1996 NBA Draft! Allen Iverson, Marcus Camby, Stephon “Starbury” Marbury, Ray “Jesus Shuttlesworth” Allen, Antoine Walker, Kobe Bryant, Peja Stojakovic, Steve Nash, Jermaine O’neal, Zyldranus Ilgauskus, 5 Time World Champion Laker Derek Fisher….so good even Ben Wallace went undrafted that year. 5 Future Hall of famers, maybe even 6 if the league is feeling generous! Moral of the story…1996 NBA Draft is the best ever.
